A Peek Inside a Session With Me

Jessica Doneley | Home Organiser Brisbane

Wondering what it’s really like to work with a professional home organiser?

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at my in-home organising sessions — practical systems, minimal products, zero judgement, and support that evolves as your family does.

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s really like to work with a professional home organiser — or how to prepare for an in-home organising session — this will hopefully give you a clear picture.

Every session begins with a free, obligation-free call. This is simply a chance for us to connect. I learn about your family, your current season of life, and what’s working (and what’s not). It’s also an opportunity for you to ask questions and understand my process.

A few questions I find particularly enlightening are:

  • What’s currently working — and what’s not?

  • Do you have a ‘too much stuff’ problem… or a ‘not enough space’ problem?

  • Ideally, would you like the systems we introduce to be adopted by the whole family?

That last question matters more than people realise. I design systems to be lived in — by children, partners, busy mornings, and tired evenings — not just to look organised. This often opens up helpful conversations around expectations, shared responsibility, and how we can reduce your mental load by sharing it.

Your environment needs to be set up to support you.

Maintenance success comes from creating systems that support your season of life. That means systems that make maintenance effortless — not a constant battle. But it also means being realistic about the season of life you’re in and the expectations on yourself and your family.

For example, you might want all laundry folded and put away each day. But if that feels like a huge burden right now, there are two ways to make it work:

  1. Adjust your system to suit this season — maybe you don’t need to fold each item with precision. Drawers and hanging space should be set up so everything is easy to access without perfection.

  2. Involve your kids — each child can put away their own laundry. Yes, the drawers might not be Instagram-perfect, but that’s realistic for your current stage.

And just so we’re clear: file-folding doesn’t make life easier. On no planet have I struggled to find a top or shorts in a simple, well-organized drawer. If you do, the problem isn’t folding — it’s probably too much volume.

A gentle word on product

Ultimately, it’s your home and your choice — always.
But this is where my approach differs from many traditional home organising services.

I don’t believe the answer lies in buying more stuff. I can’t say I have ever needed a drawer divider to have a well-organised drawer.

That’s not to say products are never useful. Occasionally, a few low-cost, practical items are helpful — especially in spaces like kitchens or pantries. But my focus is always on making a zone easier to maintain, not fuller.

Where functionality and aesthetics meet is the sweet spot. But storage for the sake of storage — or purely for visual appeal — isn’t my vibe.

I come to sessions with a small selection of low-cost, commonly useful items for you to consider where appropriate. You can feel confident knowing I’ll only recommend what will genuinely make a difference. In most cases, clients already have plenty of storage solutions that we can work with.

Zero judgement. Always.

I come with zero judgement — only an open heart and a genuine desire to make your load feel lighter.

I truly believe that enough is a decision, not an amount. You get to decide what “enough” looks like for your family.

That said, if you’re feeling overwhelmed, it’s often a sign that you’re trying to manage too much. From there, it simply becomes a values decision: what do you want your energy, time, and attention to be going towards?

Why we work together

I like to work alongside you during the session. You’re welcome to dip in and out as needed — but the real magic tends to happen when we can:

  • properly edit, declutter, and reduce the amount you’re managing

  • set up the space to support how you and your family actually move through it

This is why my decluttering services are always woven into the session, not treated as a separate or overwhelming task.

I often find myself asking, “Does this make sense for you?”
There are many ways to organise a space, but there is always one way that makes the most sense for the person using it.

This process also helps frame clear expectations — for you, for your partner, and for your children. Maintenance only works when expectations are visible, consistent, and realistic. When the environment supports those expectations, the mental load lifts and the home begins to run more collaboratively.

No prep required (really)

Because I’m not product-heavy, preparation is simple. A phone call and a few photos sent via text are usually more than enough.

In fact, I always ask that you don’t tidy beforehand. Your drop zones — in all their glory — are incredibly useful clues. If something is being put down in a particular spot, it’s usually because that’s the easiest place to put it.

We often hear, “Don’t put it down, put it away.”
I like to add: “It needs to be as easy to put away as it is to put down.”

Sometimes that means a craft drawer in the kitchen. It might not seem logical on paper, but it can be the secret ingredient that makes clearing the dining table at dinnertime effortless (#IYKYK).

On the day

I arrive with everything we need for the session:

  • vacuum cleaner

  • cleaning products

  • garbage bags

  • label maker

  • low-cost product options

  • charity bags for donations

  • packing supplies if required

We’ll mostly work side by side, but I’ll take care of the heavy lifting.

After the session, I also have capacity to remove an oversized boot-load of rubbish and charity donations — one less thing for you to think about.

A calmer home, designed to last

This is what my home organising services look like in practice — practical, calm, collaborative, and designed to support your family long after I’ve left.

If you’re craving a home that feels easier to maintain, lighter to live in, and better aligned with how your family actually functions, you don’t have to do it alone.

Make the first free consultation — and I’ll take care of the rest.
